When i began to write my song i wanted to write it in the key of B minor as I like the sound of it. I was influenced by the song Hotel California as that is also B minor and I really liked the sound of it.
Using B minor; I played around with chords that were in that key on the guitar, i used barre chords for the verse to give it a similar sound to Hotel California and made a chord sequence for my verse using B minor7 D major7 E7 G F#7 I stuck with these chords as they sounded really nice played together and i liked the use of complex chords. I used a few 7th chords in my verse sequence to create a good build up to my chorus. I then decided that i wanted my chorus to sound a bit rocky and be very lively to create contrast to my verse. I started this by choosing to not use barre chords for the chorus and began finding the chords that gave the feel i wanted for my chorus. I created the chord sequence of D A C G. This had no minor chords or barre chords and created the right sound i was looking for, which fitted perfectly with the verse. The chorus is written in D major. I also used a faster strumming pattern for the chorus.
At first to write lyrics i tried to brainstorm some ideas that i could make into lyrics, but this didn't work for as at this point i had no idea what i wanted the lyrics to sound like. So I used my guitar and played through the chord sequence over and over. I hummed a tune over the top of the chords of how i wanted to tune for the singing to go. I then worked out the sorts of lyrics that fit the tune well. I also began to create a theme for my lyrics based on a sad story of somebody looking back on their memories of a friend they lost.
